Guest kill_that_rabbit
Some of you may have seen my post on the hutch/cage i have nearly finished building (if not heres the link http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...46358&st=0) i still have the nest box and upper floor to finish and was wondering if, instead of the nestbox, a hammock type thing made from old clothes, then filled with hay would do the same job. having nothing better to do tonight, i even drew a diagram on paint hammock_for_ferret.bmp sorry but cant get image to show. Download if you want, but you probs dont need to see it anyway Edited March 24, 2008 by kill_that_rabbit Quote Link to post
stubby 175
I'd still go with a wooden box nest box, but having the hammock as a fun thing, only reason being that as ferts tend to hide some bits of their daily meals, a box in my eyes is easier to keep clean, wipe out etc, a hammock from clothing would absorbe blood etc Quote Link to post

I think that would be much less hassle than wiping a box out. Doesn't wood also absorb stuff? Quote Link to post
bullsmilk 2
THE HAY WONT STAY IN THAT FOR 5 MINS MATE ...... Quote Link to post

Doesn't wood also absorb stuff? i would deffo go with wood mate. like stubby said easy to clean and would keep the cold out more than a hammock. would still use hammock as a bit of fun for them, ill be putting one in my new hutch. nice work on the hutch by the way. good luck Quote Link to post
richie 1
put a nest box for them to have some some dark cover... mine spend the majority of the day sleeping & out of site. looking at the set-up you have, you should definately give them a seperate box, keeps the draft off them. if your worried about the wood absorbing moisture just put a light coat of non toxic wood sealer as i have done... also it looks like you hutch is drafty as it in a shed. Kay 3,709
My advice is give them a propper dark solid box you can also offer the hammock as a choice but i would always place a propper dark box in for them Quote Link to post
jazz_11 5
some one took a degree in how to use a computer.... i would personally go for the hammok and box,... as said previously.. your new ferrets might not like a hammock, my hob hates it, but my jill loves hers to bits soooooo..... keep us updated with wats going on... jultaylor1972 2
Ive got three hammocks in my court plus a proper sleeping area. Some sleep in the hammocks but as a general rule they all sleep together in the proper sleeping area. The hammocks are mostly used as play things to be honest. I would definately make a wooden sleeping area - they are unlikely to use it as a toilet so that shouldn't be a problem. Here is the sleeping area in my set up And this is what it looks like with the lid down They get their food on the bottom area and they use the far end of the set up as their toilet. If you put hay in the hammocks they will just tip it all out. I use a load of old blankets as bedding and wash them every week - simple, less mess and easy to keep clean for them. Good luck mind! Ive learned so much over this past year about ferrets and their funny ways every day is a new learning curve People on here will help you loads too! Quote Link to post

Doesn't get much harder to use than that does it? this is of course presuming that was sarcasm... Quote Link to post
SINDASOX 256
Put an old hessian sack in my cage hanging from the top with a few towels in there for them, they dont sleep in their box no more they much prefer it in the sack. SINDASOX Quote Link to post
